Listening to NPR in the car today
there was an interesting show tracing HIV all the way back to a hunter in Cameroon around 1908, who probably got it from a monkey he hunted, got a cut, blood-to-blood contact, etc…suddenly, i was out of range, the signal switched, and i was listening to a terrible gloria estefan-esque rendition of “standing on the promises.” yeah…i know i should like every Christian song ever written and all, but it was terrible.

Draw Something
if you’ve played Draw Something with me in the last two months, there is about a 19 in 20 chance that you actually played with my 5-year-old daughter. she actually draws pretty well, but she can’t read all that great, so i have to help her pick what she’s supposed to draw each round, as well as helping her sound out the word that she guesses for YOUR drawings. when i’m not around, she doesn’t let that deter her from having fun, though. she just draws whatever she wants, because she can’t read the options she’s given for what to draw. as a result, some of you have not been able to guess whatever it is that she’s created.
gretchen and i have gotten in trouble for laughing as she becomes exasperated when you are unable to guess that she’s drawn a purse, using your bombs to eliminate letters, shuffling your remaining tiles, trying to figure out that the answer is actually pencil. you have the letter tiles to spell the answer thimble, but you can’t figure out what in the world that series of blobs is, because she’s actually created a pretty realistic flower. you don’t know that it’s a flag she’s drawn because the so meticulously decorates the flag with an over-the-top rainbow design that resembles no other flag in existence, to the extent that you have no idea where to shift your focus.
she’s pretty amazing. if she keeps rendering things from her imagination to real life, and learns to use some different media, i think she could make some pretty amazing art some day. but for now, please enjoy the moments when you have no idea what i am thinking when that pencil you couldn’t guess looked more like a rhinoceros, which is why you couldn’t guess it. that’s ella. i know how to draw a pencil, and i know how to read. she’s just learning and figuring everything out as she goes, which is pretty amazing to watch.
